When do the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder usually first appear?

Because BPD isn't a disorder that you're born with, but one that occurs due to environmental factors and biology, I was wondering when the symptoms usually begin to show up. I've read that the disorder is usually triggered by a sort of abandonment, so my question is do the symptoms immediately follow the trauma that causes it, or does it take several years for the symptoms to begin showing? Also, can you function normally in adolescence with no signs of BPD, but in adult (20's or 30's) suddenly begin showing symptoms/be diagnosed? Any information on the onset of BPD would be so appreciated.
