I don't understand box and whiskers plots ?

I don't understand box and whiskers ? Like the upper quartile value, and lower quartile, and all the other stuff...can someone please explain what a box and whiskers plot to me and how to work it out ? I got my exams next week and if I fail, I'll be held back...
