How has Religion changed? How does this change relate to Maslow's hierarchy?

Well, as a whole, has religion really changed? As far as maslow's pyramid thingy (that's how I refer to it, because it sounds much more interesting), well I'd probably place religion around the third level (is that the one with "family and love"? I'm rusty on which levels are which). But I would put it there tentatively, because it's not like you can't progress farther than that level if you're an atheist or something.
