I have red, sore, iriitated eyes, help me!!!!?

Basically I went to bed one night, a couple of weeks ago and woke up with my right eye quite sore, red and with a slight amount of discharge. I let it go for the day and It only got worse. Approx 4 days ped before I actually went to see an optometrist. She sent me to an eye specialist. He simply said it was a viral infection and sent me home with some drops which he ured me would clear the problem. T he drops which were FML drops have seemed to make it worse and the condition is now in both eyes. I have since been back to the eye specialists who thinks the condition has improved in the right eye but has progressed in the left eye. He said the condition in the left eye will get worse before it gets better. It feels like there is something "gritty" in the eye. Eyes constantly watering, vision has depreciated, constant cloudiness or blur in eye, very sensitive to light. It cant be an allergy because there has been no recent change in weather, no change to my shampoo, condition, moisturiser or other products. I have never had problems with my eyes at all. Does anyone have any ideas????
